It Worked For Me In Life and Leadership
Colin Powell with Tony Koltz
Harper
10 East 53rd Street, New York, New York 10022
9780062135124, $27.99 www.amazon.com, www.harpercollins.com

“It Worked For Me In Life and Leadership” is a wonderful upbeat set of tips General Colin Powell has used to guide him through his life that he now passes on to readers.  He has 13 principals he discusses and tells about some of the people who have influenced him along the way.  He is very modest about himself and relates stories about his years of public service that are interesting also very revealing about many of the historical event he has been fortunate to be a part of.   Powell has always been an officer and a gentleman and “It Worked for Me In Life and Leadership” shows why

 Naked City The Television Series
James Rosin
The Autumn Road Company, Philadelphia PA
9780425246061, $19.95, www, amazon.com, www.classictvseriesbooks.com

“Naked City the Television Series” tells about the name of the show and how it changed the industry of television and how “Naked City” was different from others of the time,  how the show evolved.  There are episode guides for each season.  These are just a few of the things covered in this edition of Rosin’s expose of the groundbreaking series.  Recently Rosin has come out with revised editions of Wagon Train, Adventures in Paradise, The Invaders, and a new expanded and updated version of Naked City is due out in a few weeks. .Regardless of the edition Rosin has always made it fun to read about other shows and “Naked City” is another great look back at a very different era of television.

God, If You’re Not Up There, I’m F*cked
Darrell Hammond
Harper
10 East 53rd Street, New York, New York 10022
9780062064554, $25.99 www.amazon.com, www.harpercollins.com

I was surprised how much Hammond is willing to tell about his drug use in his autobiography “God, If You’re Not Up There I’m F*cked.”  He reveals that on his way up the ladder of stardom he became addicted to drugs very early and he gives his perception of why he thinks he has been an addict for so long.  Also he tells about his days on “Saturday Night Live” and reveals many unknown secrets about the show.  Some may find the title offensive but his message in “God, If You’re Not Up There, I’m F*cked’ is clear about how weak someone can be to any kind of addiction.

Hoist Up Your Muffin Top and Show Me Your New Belt
Terry Ayrault
Outskirts Press Inc
Denver, Colorado
9781432788018, $12.95, www.amazon.com www.outskirtspress.com

I do not know why movies and authors insist on filling works with so much toilet humor.  “Hoist up Your Muffin Top and Show Me Your New Belt” has more than its fair share of what many will find in poor taste.  Many of the pieces are too plain, dull, and worthless tales.  “Hoist Up Your Muffin Top and Show Me Your New Belt” is not funny as it claims on the back of the book.  Instead it is a waste of paper for the hard copy and an abuse of space for the e book edition.

Musika A Delightfully Harmonic Tale of the Origin of Music
By Albeto Herrera
Outskirts Press Inc, Denver, Colorado
9781432788070, $25.95, www.amazon.com www.outskirtspress.com

I don’t know how true the story in “Musika” is, but it is a fun tale that shows how music in a portion of the world began. The artwork, also by the author, is a bright happy addition that adds to the spirit of the book.  Both art and prose in “Musika” show the importance of birds and music in our society.

Book Reviews by Gary Roen

My Daddy is a Marine A History of the U. S. Marine Corps
Dennis Vebert
Stark Productions, Inc.

Told through the eyes of children “My Daddy is a Marine” takes readers from the creation of the Marine Corps to the present war on terrorism.  Each story is of a conflict  in which the Corps has participated.  The author has an easy to follow style that makes it fun to read history.  Though written for kids “My Daddy is a Marine” is for anyone who wants to learn more about the Marine Corps.

11th Hour
James Patterson and Maxine Paetro
Little Brown and Company
Hachette Book Group USA

“11th Hour” is another fast paced thriller in The Women’s Murder Club series.  This time Lindsay Boxer is pregnant and she has two different murder cases she is investigating.  One is a bunch of severed heads on a movie star’s property and the other is a series of killings that have one common thread.  Patterson and Paetro once again have a very tightly written thriller that races along to its final conclusion with great characters, conflicts, and page turning suspense.  “11th Hour” is a great addition to this series that gets better with each book.

Robert B. Parker’s Lullaby
By Ace Atkins
Putnam

Spenser is back in “Robert B. Parker’s Lullaby” the first Spenser novel to not be written by Robert B. Parker.  The trick Ace Atkins had to pull off is how near to Parker’s style is this new one.  It is very close in several ways.  The characters of Spenser, Hawk, and Susan have for the most part the feel, as does the writing that is filled with the snappy witty dialogue that was a trademark of Parker and it moves along at a very brisk pace to the end.  Where it is a bit different is that too many of the characters swear,  to where it is so noticeable that it tends to detract from the story.  I can not remember Parkers use of those kind of words to fill the story. Fans of Spenser will enjoy “Robert B. Parker’s Lullaby” in spite of the bad language.

The Accident
Linwood Barclay
Bantam

“The Accident” is another solid tale of suspense by a master of the genre.  Glen Garber cannot accept that his wife had a drinking problem and died in an accidental car crash.  As he begins to piece things together his whole life begins to turn upside down.  At the same time,  people he thought he knew are anything but what they seemed.  Barclay once again drives the story along with interesting characters and a fast paced thriller that has the readers rapidly turning pages.  “The Accident “ is a chilling tale of greed and how it can change a person’s life.

Family Affair
Debbie Macomber
William Morrow

“Family Affair” is another great novel by Macomber that is a fast paced read with interesting characters and many different conflicts that are resolved by the end of the novel.  Lacey Lancaster has a cat named Cleo who is the gem of her life.  Lancaster has a neighbor named Jack Walker who is always arguing with a girl whom he wants to move in with him.    He also has a cat named Dog.  It is an interesting reason that brings them together and Lacey finds out that not everything is as it seems.  “Family Affair” is a short wonderful tale that will please Macomber fans.

Lost and Found
Karen L. Syed
Echelon Press LLC

Allison Ryder is having a terrible day and it does not seem to be getting any better.  She is having problems with a neighbor and her work is not going too well either.  Things just seem to be getting worse and that’s just the beginning of the novel.  Syed has written a fun filled story that has interesting characters and a nice even pace that concludes with a very satisfying ending.  “Lost and Found” is good clean fun.

Imperfect Justice Prosecuting Casey Anthony
Jeff Ashton with Lisa Pulitzer
William Morrow

There are lots of  reasons this case was lost by the state of Florida and readers will be able to see many of them in “Imperfect Justice Prosecuting Casey Anthony.”  Now Jeff Ashton one of the state attorneys who prosecuted this case,  reveals many of the things often suspected about this case that was a world wide event for over 3 years. Ashton who  was the chief prosecutor of the Carla Larson murder detailed in “Evidence of Murder,” had a winning record until he was brought into the Casey Anthony fiasco.   Ashton is quick to point out that he was not the lead prosecutor for this case and he gives many insights about it and some of the problems the state of Florida had  Some of the things that stand out are how the entire Anthony family lied to protect Casey, the many sides of Casey that were exposed, the request by the jury on day three of the trial and how it was so revealing to the final verdict. “Imperfect Justice Prosecuting Casey Anthony” shows why this case was a travesty of justice.

The Collaborator Rules 101 Surefire Ways to Stay Friends With Your Co-Author
Sally Shields
Safflower Publishing Inc

I’m not a big fan of partnerships in writing because so many of the ones I’ve been in and that I’ve seen  end up so negative.  I have to say though if there is a formula to not have problems this is the best resource to guide the two writers to a happy working relationship.  Shields easily points out 101 surefire ways to avoid major problems.  The book is easy to follow and has a lot of simple things that people never think to do.  Class 101 Collaborator Rules is now in session.

The Journey Less Traveled: Choose to Turn Your Tragedy into Triumph
Loretta Faith Harris
Children’s Heart Publishing

“The Journey Less Traveled: Choose to Turn Your Tragedy Into Triumph”  is the remarkable account by the author after her major car accident and how she has turned her life around from that incident.  She begins the book the day of the crash that took the life of one of her passengers.  She reveals that doctors gave her very little chance to live through it with all the damage that had been done to her body.  It was a very slow process through many surgeries and rehab therapy. There are several things she shows that  helped her along the way.  Her belief in God, her prayers,  the love and support of her family proved to her that you can choose to make your life happy or bitter.  “The Journey Less Traveled: Choose to Turn Your Tragedy into Triumph” is an inspirational story that shows that miracles do happen and that people can control many of the things that happen to them.

Is She Naturally Thin or Disciplined? Insider Secrets of the Sexy and Slim!
Sally Shields
Blooming Twig Books

Sally Shields is back with a new slant to the subject of how women stay so thin.  “Is She Naturally Thin Or Disciplined? Insider Secrets of the Sexy and Slim” shows the techniques that women use to stay thin.  Shields divided the book into ages starting with women in their twenties to ones in their sixties.  There are many similar things all have in common.  Eating certain foods in moderation, regular exercise programs, dealing with stress better, more awareness of what is in food are just some of the things they talk about.  “Is She Naturally Thin or Disciplined? Insider Secrets of the Sexy and Slim” is an interesting look at how women of different ages and professions stay thin and physically fit this is a great resource for anyone to stay healthy.

The Lost Tail of the Hare or How the Bunny Lost His Tail
Dennis Vebert

“The Lost Tail of the Hare Or How the Bunny Lost His Tail” is a fun little story about how a rabbit lost a portion of his tail while trying to get away from a big bad wolf.  The characters are fun while the writing is very easy to follow with a very happy ending.  Vebert is a great story teller who is comfortable writing children’s stories or adult novels and the artwork by the author showcases another aspect of his talent.  “The Lost Tail of the Hare Or How the Bunny Lost His Tail” is a kid’s book that is excellent reading for all ages.

Book Reviews by Gary Roen

The Skinvestigator Rash Guard
Terry Cronin
www.3boysproductions.com
www.studentsoftheunusual.com

“The Skinvestigator Rash Guard” is a much better book than “The Skinvestigator Tramp Stamp.”  Dr. Harry Poe is an interesting likable character who is a dermatologist and he also works with the Miami police department to solve crimes.  The author has a nice pace to the story that is also filled with authentic medical information that Cronin mixes in generous doses to the novel.  “The Skinvestigator Rash Guard” is a fast paced mystery filled with medical facts that are educational reading.

Myth Interpretations
Robert Asprin edited by Bill Fawcett
Baen Books
www.baen.com

Myth Interpretations” is one of the best collections of Robert Asprin that showcases some of his best humorous works.  Two of the best are “You Never Call” how moms influence starship captains and “Con Job” that takes place at Dragoncon.  All of the tales are fun reading by a master of comic sf fantasy.  “Myth Interpretations is an outstanding collection that is sure to delight many new readers to Robert Asprin.

Miracle Cure
Harlan Coben

Signet
www.penguin.com

“Miracle Cure,” the second novel this author wrote that has been out of print for many years is back and it is a great fast paced tale that is filled with interesting characters and many complicated twists that move the book along to its surprising ending.  Like “Play Dead” Coben explains that he feels there are many flaws in the story.  I do not agree “Miracle Cure is a nail biting novel of suspense by a master story teller.

Perfectly Amanda Gunsmoke’s “Miss Kitty” To Dodge and Beyond
Beckey Burgoyne
Five Star Publications Inc,
www.FiveStarPublications.com

www.PerfectlyAmanda.com

“Perfectly Amanda Gunsmoke’s “Miss Kitty” To Dodge and Beyond” is the first book to reveal little known facts about Amanda Blake who played “Miss Kitty” on the hit show “Gunsmoke”  Author Beckey Burgoyne tells many other tidbits of information about the show, the actors, and many appearances the cast made throughout the years.  There are also lots of great pictures.   No fan of “Gunsmoke” should miss this great addition to the legendary show.

Cemetery Girl
David Bell
NAL
www.penguin.com

“Cemetery Girl” is one of the strangest novels I have ever read.  Twelve year old Caitlin disappears from her parents.  There are no clues, no leads, and no explanations for her disappearance.  Four years later she walks back into her parents’ lives.  She is very different and she won’t tell them any details of the lost four years.  The author does a great job of showing the effect of a stressful situation like this and its effect on a marriage.  “Cemetery Girl” is a page turner thriller that locks the reader in on the first page and never lets go.

Middle School the Worst Years of My Life
James Patterson and Chris Tebbetts
Little Brown and Company
Hachette Book Group USA
www.HatchetteBookGroupUSA.com

Patterson and Chris Tebbetts in “Middle School the Worst Years of My Life” have written a laugh out loud book that anyone in school can relate to.  Rafe Khatchadorian has a series of adventures that are all fun.  He has to deal with a teacher named the Dragon Lady, a bully repeatedly, and lots of other things.  “Middle School the Worst Years of my Life” is a much funnier better story than “Diary of a Wimpy Kid.”

Stony Man Terminal Guidance
Gold Eagle
www.readgoldeagle.blogspot.com

The series is hotter than ever with “Terminal Guidance.”   Phoenix Force and Able Team are back in action this time up against a group of terrorists who want to once again hit targets in the United States.  The “Stony Man” novels have always delivered great action adventure and “Terminal Guidance” is a shining example of why the books have always been so popular.

Let Me Be Me
Owen Doss and Deborah Motley
Legacy Publishing Services Inc
www.LegacyBookPublishing.com

“Let Me Be Me” is a message to kids on how to know what they would like to be, how to study themselves and know who they are.  The authors tell how we all do things to impress others and that we have to be what others think we should be.  They also are very practical in telling people to be who they want to be. “We are trying to be what we think people want us to be….someone else is trying to change us into what they want us to be.  The bottom line is I am never good enough.  This is something society has taught us since the beginning of time.  We are never satisfied with who we are, what we are, where we come from, where we are going”   The authors teach people that it is alright to be the person you want to be in easy to understand terms and examples  “Let Me Be Me” is a ground breaking book that everyone should read and learn from.

Dream Walking & Other Pursuits
The Artwork of Jenni Gregory
www.dreamwalkerpress.com

“Dream Walking & Other Pursuits the Artwork of Jenni Gregory” is an invitation to readers and fans of comic book to view the sketch book of a very talented artist.  There are many different types of works Gregory displays.  From comics to pieces that highlight color the book is filled with amazing things for readers to appreciate.  “Dream Walking & Other Pursuits the Artwork of Jenni Gregory is an amazing collection by a gifted artist

Jagger Rebel, Rock Star, Rambler, Rouge
Marc Spitz
Gotham Books
www.penguin.com

Most of what Marc Spitz tells in “Jagger Rebel, Rock Star, Rambler, Rogue” I have either heard about or read in other books about the Rolling Stones.  I was amazed that Spitz spent a whole chapter about Truman Capote telling about the article for Vanity Fair that never was.  Capote never wrote the first word for them about Mick Jagger even though he was very close to him. I also felt that the book spent too much time dealing with the Rolling Stones of the 1960s and 1970s.  Rolling Stone fans may enjoy Jagger Rebel, Rock Star, Rambler, Rogue.

Book reviews by Gary Roen

The Switch
Sandra Brown
Grand Central Publishing
www.HachetteBookGroupUSA.com

Sandra Brown’s thriller “The Switch  is one of her most complicated plots.  It begins with Gillian and Melina, identical twin sisters who meet for lunch. Gillian tells Melina she has been trying to conceive a child by artificial insemination at the Waters Clinic. The talk is light and later in the meal Melina proposes an idea that the two sisters switch like they did when they were children.  At first Gillian is not interested but later decides to do it just for the fun of it.  She impersonates Melina while Melina is Gillian.  Simple enough all Melina has to do is escort a Colonel Christopher Hart also known as “Chief,” a former astronaut, to a NASA. Banquet.   Everything is fine until Hart and his escort go to a Taco Bell where the two encounter Dale Gordon who calls her Gillian.  Gillian as Melina plays along and tells Hart that Gordon has her confused for her twin sister Gillian.   It happens that Gordon works for the Waters Center and knows Gillian is one of the patients.  He follows them and realizes that Gillian is going to Hart’s hotel room.  Gordon is obsessed with Gillian.  After the sisters have switched back Gordon breaks into Gillian’s home and ends up killing her.  Melina is called by police and told her sister is dead.  With the help of Colonel Hart they track down information.  As they piece the data together they find that other women who have gone to the Waters Center have had children kidnapped or turned up dead.  They are also able to track down Gordon because he had introduced himself when they had encountered him at the taco restaurant.   Gordon, a disciple of Brother Gabriel a religious spiritual leader, asks for forgiveness for killing Gillian.   Later Gordon is found dead.  The police conclude their investigation but Melina and Hart have just begun theirs.  Brother Gabriel at first is a backdrop character until later in the book when Brown ties all of her puzzles together in a nice neat package.  Gillian and Hart are attacked several times while they piece together the pieces of the mystery.  Brown has written a tight plot with believable characters.  The story unfolds in waves until the final shocking revelation of Brother Gabriel’s real purpose.  “The Switch  is an evil tale at its best.

Dirt
Stuart Woods
Harper Fiction
www.harpercollins.com

Stuart Woods, is always high on the must read list, “Dirt” is novel that is sure to please.  Part of the reason is Stone Barrington is one of the most likable characters Woods has ever created.  Amanda Dart, who writes gossip on anyone she can, now has the tables turned.  She is the victim of someone who is anonymously faxing to press people vicious things about her.  She has hired Stone Barrington to find out who is sending the transmission and stop them.  “Dirt” is a bit slower than some of Woods other works but it is a very satisfying read

Guilty Pleasures
Lawrence Sanders
Berkley Books
www.penguiin.com

Sanders novels are usually fast paced exciting reading.  His books are filled with interesting likable characters involved in fascinating situations.  That sadly, is not the case here. “Guilty Pleasures is the story of the wealthy Folsby family from the ‘70s to the ‘90s.  Emmet Richard Folsby, founder of a huge publishing firm is the patriarch of the family.  He has a wife, Constance Louise, and two children. Barbara Ann and Brett Sherwood.  The book centers around the Barbara and Brett relationship.  Barbara is an aggressive ambitious businesswoman while Brett is a lazy dashing playboy with strong sexual needs.  He is also Barbara’s worst enemy.  A more interesting part of the book is the relationship between Judge Seth Parnell his housekeeper and her son Noah.  He takes care of them and becomes somewhat a father figure to Noah.  He also seems to know many secrets of the Folsby family.  With this mix of characters one expects the novel to be an exhilarating thriller that the author is known for.  But something is wrong here.  The characters are flat, boring and unlikable while the writing is slow and very uneven.  Nothing really exciting ever happens.  The author plays on a relationship between Barbra and Noah that goes nowhere.  Brett is wearisome as he has wild sexual escapades and the book would have been a lot more interesting if it had been about the Judge.  There is no mystery or humor like the author’s “Deadly Sins” or “McNally” series that are so much fun to read.  What is also lacking here is the wit Sanders usually provides in his novels.  “Guilty Pleasures doesn’t even have the class of his novel “Capital Crimes” in which an evangelist advised the President of the United States on policy.  Sanders, who is no longer with us, should have gone out with a bang instead he left with a whimper.

The Adventures of PJ and Split Pea Volume 1 Fine Feathered Friends
S.D Moore illustrations by Bobb Switzer
Outskirts Press Inc, Denver, Colorado
www.outskirtspress.com

“The Adventures of PJ and Split Pea Volume I Fine Feathered Friends is the first of a series of books for young kids.  P J is a little boy who for so long has been laughed at by other kids.  He and his parents go to the pet store to buy an animal for him to pal around with.  They pick Split Pea a talking green parrot. Together they work to solve problems.  What I liked abut this book is how the two characters become great friends.    What’s nice is that all ages can read this book and enjoy.   No one is ever too old to like “The Adventures of PJ and Split Pea Volume I Fine Feathered Friends”

Modern Day Gettysburg A Portrait of the Most Famous Little Town in America
Lisa C. Phillips
Outskirts Press Inc, Denver, Colorado
www.outskirtspress.com

“Modern Day Gettysburg A Portrait of the Most Famous Little Town in America”  takes the reader on a journey of the town of Gettysburg.  She talks about the role it played in the Civil War and she shows that there is more to the area than the War between the States.   She shows how close it is to other big cities in several bordering states and ones in Pennsylvania.  She talks about famous people who have lived there and there are so many colorful pictures that add to the feel of the book.  The writer has done a great job  in “Modern Day Gettysburg A Portrait of the Most Famous Little Town in America showcasing the area as an attraction that makes you want to go and visit.

Swimming to Catalina
Stuart Woods
Harper Fiction
www.harpercollins.com

With a walloping beginning in which Stone is almost killed by two thugs, “Swimming to Catalina” then picks up where “Dead in the Water” ended and moves along to a dashing finish.  In this narrative Woods does some things that don’t really add up with the situation he has created.  For instance Stone, who many think is dead does not keep a low profile and he even takes some time out for some very graphic sexual activity with a woman who could run back to some other characters and reveal that he is not dead.  Even so, “Swimming to Catalina” is exciting with great writing and fascinating characters that move the tale along.

Where’s My LD? Little Dinosaur
Donnell Robinsom illustrated by Irene Michel
Outskirts Press Inc, Denver, Colorado
www.outskirtspress.com

Malcolm is having a very bad day.  He can’t find his dinosaur.  He looks everywhere he can think of, but he can’t locate him.  His parents take him to camp where he meets and plays with lots of other kids.  Only readers will find out if he finds his best friend.  The best kid’s books always have little messages for youngsters to learn.  This one has several good ones.  “Where’s My LD?  Little Dinosaur” is another fun little gem that is very interesting reading.

Pajamas and the Days of the Week
Higina Da Guia  illustrated by John da Guia
Outskirts Press Inc
www.outskirtspress.com

“Pajamas and the Days of the Week is for all ages.  The story is all about pajamas.  I loved how the author compared snuggling under the covers to a snail.  He also tells a nice little joke at the end.  What’s unique though, is the work is told in two languages, English and Portuguese.  The bright happy colors of the artwork also convey the cheerful feel.  “Pajamas and the Days of the Week”  is a witty story about why we wear pajamas.

Devil Eyes
Prudence Foster
Wings ePres Inc.
www.j.wings-press.com

Take an ancient Seminole Indian curse, a hurricane on a track to hit a small south Florida town, and a small child who has unusual visions.  These are part of what makes “Devil Eyes” such a good chilling story to enjoy.  Foster for a third time delves into the world of horror that will have readers spellbound as they turn pages to find the revealing conclusion.  Foster has combined elements of the occult and the rites and rituals of the Seminole Indians set against the backdrop of a small Florida city.  She also has created memorable characters who have several conflicts that also help move the story along.  “Blood Legacy” and the “Vow” her two other books in the realm of horror were very good but “Devil Eyes” is much more chilling which shows why Foster is a master horror suspense writer.

Is She Naturally Thin or Disciplined? Insider Secrets of the Sexy and Slim!

Sally Shields is back with a new slant to the subject of how women stay so thin.  “Is She Naturally Thin Or Disciplined? Kill Me If You Can
James Patterson and Marshall Karp
Little Brown and Company
Hachette Book Group USA
www.HatchetteBookGroupUSA.com

“Kill Me If You Can” grabbed my attention from the first page where Mathew Bannon, a poor art student finds a medical bag filled with diamonds at Grand Central Station.  Later he finds out several hired killers are after him because of the bag he found.  The novel held my interest until it took a twist with the character of Mathew Bannon that was just not believable.  From then on it is a tedious contrived novel that finally reaches its end  “Kill Me If You Can” was a very disappointing novel that was not as well thought out as it should have been.

Guilty As Sin
Joseph Teller
Mira
www.jaywalkercases.com

Joseph Teller is back with “Guilty As Sin,” another great legal thriller in the Jaywalker series.  Jaywalker always takes on the impossible cases and this one of a career criminal since age fifteen looks like an impossible to win situation because his client is guilty as charged.  Teller, who was once a defense attorney, is a master of the legal thriller and like his other novels “Guilty As Sin” is based on one of his cases.

You Never See Fat Vampires
Mark H Newhouse
Court Jester Publications
www.courtjesterpublications.com

Mark Newhouse has written an interesting twist to the vampire tale with “You Never See Fat Vampires.”  The Midnight Diet Club is not what it seems.  Yes, the members have lost weight but it is how they have done it and what they have had to give up that make it such a different approach to weight loss.  “You Never See Fat Vampires” is geared to a YA audience because the kids are in public school but the novel is one that any age reader can enjoy because the conflicts, characters and story are so interesting.

If You Had Wings
Kayton D. Scarboro
Legacy Publishing Services Inc
www.LegacyBookPublishing.com

Scarboro mixes elements in generous doses similar to “Indiana Jones” “Ghost” and “Star Wars’  in this first of a trilogy “If You Had Wings”   The novel also has characters in the conflicts that race the story along to its final surprising ending that is left wide open for book two.  I have a complaint that there are too many characters with similar names like Eve and Eva, Stan and Samuel.  This is a mistake many authors make that causes confusion throughout the novel.  Otherwise “If You had Wings” is a very good novel that is a fast paced thriller.

Stay Tuned For Murder
Mary Kennedy
Signet
www.penguin.com

“Stay Tuned For Murder,”  the third in the series of this series, is lots of fun with many different things going on.  In this one talk show host Maggie Walsh has her hands full with her guest Madame Chantel who talks to the dead on the air, and the station is promoting a fifty year old time capsule.  Along the way Maggie has to solve several murders as well that somehow are tied into Madame Chantel.  Kennedy is a writer who makes it fun to read mysteries and “Stay Tuned For Murder” is a prime example.

Its been a long time since I’ve read anything by this author but “Hollywood Hills” is a  delightful read with great writing and lots of memorable characters.  An art dealer plans to steal two paintings from a mansion while a group of teenage criminals named “The Bling Ring,” and a  pair of drug addicted thieves also  plan to take the same paintings.  The cops at Hollywood Station will have their hands full protecting the public  from these criminals.  “Hollywood Hills” is a great addition to the list of novels by this author.

Poison Pen

“Poison Pen” is the first of a series of novels of forensic handwriting expert Claudia Rose.  The body of Lindsey Alexander is found floating in her Jacuzzi.   A friend of Claudia Rose tries to get her to understand that this woman would not commit suicide even though there is a note.   Claudia becomes involved in a case that could get her killed.  “Poison Pen”  is a tightly written mystery that is a fast paced read with interesting situations and characters.

One Second After
William R. Forstchen Foreword by Newt Gingrich
Tor

www.tor-forge.com
What would happen if America as we know it was shut down by a silent enemy?  The novel opens with that kind of scenario with the entire nation affected.  No modern cars work, electricity is shut off, lights at intersections are blank, phones are shut down computers don’t work; the country is at a complete stand still.   “One Second After” is a chilling tale that is not that far fetched because the author has based this situation on our present day technology currently in use.  “One Second After” is this generations’ “Alas Babylon” or “On the Beach” novel that is a red flag warning of what could happen.

The Prostitutes’ Ball
Stephen J. Cannell
St Martins Press
www.stmartins.com

I am sorry to say this is the last Shane Scully novel by this author.  Cannell died just as this book was coming out.  “The Prostitutes’ Ball”  is another great story of detective Shane Scully delving into the underworld of the Hollywood Hills to solve a murder case.  The novel is a fast paced tale of mystery that has lots of fun characters and situations only an insider in the world of film would know about.

The Collaborator Rules 101 Surefire Ways to Stay Friends With Your Co-Author
Sally Shields

I’m not a big fan of partnerships in writing because so many of the ones I’ve been in and that I’ve seen  end up so negative.  I have to say though if there is a formula to not have problems this is the best resource to guide the two writers to a happy working relationship.  Shields easily points out 101 surefire ways to avoid major problems.  The book is easy to follow and has a lot of simple things that people never think to do.  Class 101 Collaborator Rules is now in session.

Michael Vey the Prisoner of Cell 25” is the first of a series of YA novels that deal with children with special powers. In total there are 17 who have different levels of specialties. One can deprogram a person’s brain as you would erase a computer memory others have the ability to electrically charge a person. Michael and several others learn of their abilities and form a club. They also learn that the people they think are their parents aren’t even related to them. The author has told a story that reads at a breakneck pace and is a non stop suspenseful adventure all the way to the end that leaves it open for a sequel. Fans of James Patterson’s “Maximum Ride” series should love Richard Paul Evans newest novel. Though “Michael Vey the Prisoner of Cell 25” is marketed as a YA novel it is a tightly written thriller that any age can read and enjoy.

The Paper American Seeking Acceptance in a New Country
Lina Rudel
Legacy Publishing Services Inc
www.LegacyBookPublishing.com
$15.95
www.amazon.com

“The Paper American Seeking Acceptance in a New Country is a book that deals with many different issues. On one level it is how someone living in Nazi Germany dealt with everyday matters. On another it is the story of a girl and how she endured an abusive father. Later the author talks about how others say she has had a lucky life. She disagrees with that statement by showing that she has made things happen for herself. She has been an attorney, a real estate agent and worked her way up the ladder of success as a German who became an American citizen. She says though on paper she is a full U. S. citizen. In reality for whatever reason she isn’t a full citizen of this country she believes. By that attitude she has forgotten that this country has always been a nation of immigrants who came here from other countries for a better life. If anything Lina Rudel in her book “The Paper American” is a shining example of what is so great about this country.

The Color of Life
Dennis Vebert
Denjoy@embarqumall.com
www.FinArtAmerica.com
$15.95
www.amazon.com

“The Color of Life” started a little slow but it picked up and moved along at a nice pace to its ending that was very satisfying. Part of the attraction of this book is the artwork that fills the pages of this novel that are part of the author’s collection of work he has painted. The artwork like the novel reveals a very different side of the state of Florida that in many areas is long gone. His characters are believable and well fleshed out as they deal with the conflicts that move the story along. Dennis Vebert is a very talented author in many different artistic ways. “The Color of Life” is perfect material for a great family film.

Abe’s Lucky Day

Outskirts Press Inc
www.outskirtspress.com
$12.95
www.amazon.com

“Abe’s Lucky Day” is the first kid’s book I’ve encountered to have as its main character a person who is homeless. Warren and artist Kalpart illustrate very well the statement “What goes around comes around” with Abe who even though he is homeless, thinks more of others than himself. By the end of the book something positive happens to him that bears out the statement. “Abe’s Lucky Day” is an affirmative message for readers of all ages.

As Nora Jo Fades Away Confessions of a Caregiver
A Memoir by Lisa Cerasoli
Five Star Publications Inc.
www.LegendsintheKitchen.com
$15.95
www.amazon.com

I found “As Nora Jo Fades Away Confessions of a Caregiver” to be a very hard book to follow because the author jumped around in time, concentrated on her father, mother and her grandmother at the same time throughout the work. One moment I thought she was dealing with her father and found she was talking about her grandmother or mother. Sometimes I wasn’t sure who she was dealing with. I understand she is telling about a loved one in dementia and later Alzheimer’s disease. I wish “As Nora Jo Fades Away Confessions of a Caregiver” had been clearer in its depiction of a person passing through this terrible disease.

Principles of Abundance for the Cosmic Citizen Enough For Us All Volume One
Dorthy I. Riddle
Author House
$14.95
www.amazon.com

I’m not sure what the author was trying to say in “Principles of Abundance for the Cosmic Citizen.” She talks about energy, scarcity, having enough, and other things that sounded interesting at first. In her explanations she never seems to explain any of her topics with anything to grasp. I was reminded of the new “Battlestar Galactica” statement “So say us all.” That one I could understand. Hers of “Enough For Us All.” I couldn’t. Readers would be better served to ignore “Principles of Abundance for the Cosmic Citizen.
